Matryoshka - Russian Nesting Dolls
A Matroyshka doll, also known as a Russian Nesting Doll, is a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other. The name “matroyshka” literally means “little matron” and is a diminutive form of the Russian female first name “Matryona”
A set of matroyshkas consists of a wooden figure which separates, top from bottom, to reveal a smaller figure of the same sort inside, which has, in turn, another smaller figure inside it, and so on.
Although we always considered the dolls as Russian, in fact, the first Russian nested doll was carved in 1890 and was actually inspired by a doll from Japan. They are now associated with Russia, are crafted there and shipped around the world.
